in other words, wake up microsoft... we need Excel for LINUX!

DATE: June 15, 1999 To answer some of the questions I've been asked recently about Linux I put together this list of URL's. I've been using Linux since about 1994. RedHat makes it so much easier to install than it used to be. Linux is stable, efficient and fast. It will work on a 386 with as little as a 200 meg hard drive. I've loaded it on an old Sparc LX with only 24M of Ram and a 500M hard drive (the entire Red Hat 5.1 install!). I've identified office type applications as well. ApplixWare is available for $99, as well as Corel Word Perfect (free for personal evaluation!). I saw RedHat 5.2 for sale at Costco in Everett,WA for $29.95, however RedHat 6.0 is out now. My guess is that Microsoft will see Linux as a growing market and will write their applications for Linux. If they make Excel available for UNIX/Linux, I'll buy it. Microsoft has already developed Internet Explorer for UNIX, however it is a resource hog compared to Netscape and I don't recommend using it on a UNIX platform. (I've tested it on HP-UX and Solaris). john ================================================================= what is Linux? http://linuxresources.com/what.html http://www.linux.org/ http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX/LINUX/LINUX-primer.html --------------------------------------- LINUX SOURCES: RedHat: http://www.redhat.com/ Slackware: http://www.slackware.com/ Debian: http://www.debian.org/ Yggdrasil (plug n play & linux info.) http://www.yggdrasil.com/ --------------------------------------- LINUX HARDWARE: Sun runs Linux: http://www.ultralinux.org/ HP embraces Linux: http://www.hp.com/pressrel/jan99/27jan99b.htm even Compaq and Dell are on the Linux bus... : http://www.dell.com/products/poweredge/linux/index.htm http://www.redhat.com/corp/press_compaq.html SGI: http://reality.sgi.com/raju/software.html Dec Alpha: http://www.swt.com/alpha_linux.html (there is a new company called Lightbox, Linux pre-installed for you, Peter Dewey is starting it and he may be reached at http://www.wagoneers.com email: pytr@wagoneers.com ) --------------------------------------- are there APPLICATIONS for Linux? http://www.applix.com/appware/linux/index.htm Corel Word Perfect http://www.linuxjournal.com/previous/3046.html http://linux.corel.com/linux8/index.htm free copy of WORD PERFECT: http://linux.corel.com/download.htm applix ware office for Linux $99 ! http://www.applix.com/solutions/office.htm http://www.applix.com/appware/oa/oaover.htm Spreadsheet for Linux: http://www.applix.com/appware/oa/spread.htm HTML editor for Linux: http://www.applix.com/appware/oa/HTML.html Even 3d modeling: http://linux3d.netpedia.net/ Ingres anyone? http://www.cai.com/products/betas/ingres_linux/ingres_linux.htm Oracle? http://www.oracle.com/html/linux.html Not just for Geeks anymore: http://www.zdnet.com/sr/business/opportunity/980211b.html Logitech: http://headline.gamespot.com/news/99_04/16_pc_loglin/index.html --------------------------------------- john's pages on UNIX, LINUX and Sysadm: http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX/LINUX/LINUX-primer.html http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX/LINUX/ http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX http://www.wagoneers.com/UNIX/SYSADM http://www.wagoneers.com/john/UNIX http://www.wagoneers.com/john/UNIX/SYSADM --------------------------------------- Miscellaneous information and sources on Linux: http://linuxresources.com/ http://linuxresources.com/articles/style/002.html http://www.ugu.com/sui/ugu/show?I=linux&F=1111111111&G=Y http://www.linuxjournal.com/store/ http://linuxresources.com/articles/conversations/002.html http://www.samag.com/ http://www.linuxweb.com/ http://www.networkcomputing.com/shared/printArticle?article=nc/1011/1011f1full.html&pub=nwc Tucows is even helping with Linux: http://howto.linuxberg.com/faq.html --------------------------------------- what microsoft says about Linux: http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/security/techdetails/techcomp/nt_unix.asp http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/nts/news/msnw/nt4vLinux.asp http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/nts/news/mwarv/UNIXaddon.asp http://detnews.com/1998/technology/9811/06/11060137.htm Balmer on Linux & Apache: http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/zdnn_smgraph_display/0,3441,2134010,00.html is microsoft clueless? http://www.cluetrain.com/ http://www.cluetrain.com/#manifesto --------------------------------------- what is KDE/GNOME http://linuxresources.com/articles/wunderland/001.html who or what is a Linus? http://linuxresources.com/linus.html forbes on Linux: http://www.forbes.com/forbes/98/0907/6205216a.htm ---------------------------------------
