Ways to fight Spam

While there isn't a permanent solution to the ubiquitous Spam network,
you can, however, keep Spam mail controlled. The most convenient ways
for you to do so is to use the junk mail filter that every email server
comes with. Apart from this however, there are some very basic
precautionary measures that can keep Spam at bay.

NEVER reply to Spam

The following instruction "click on the link below to unsubscribe" might sound like the end of the Spam rampage, but the minute you click you are actually confirming that yours is a valid email address. What's worse is that they will sell your ID to every other Spammer on the face of the earth.

Don't post your email on your website

While it is a cool thing to post your email on your personal home page, don't forget that you are actually giving out an invitation to Spammers. This is because Spammers use a special kind of software that "harvests" email addresses from the net. It is so programmed to seek strings that are something@something.com and catalog the information onto a database.

Use a second email id in newsgroups

Newsgroups make for fertile email collecting grounds. So take care not to post your address to a group. Instead, use an alternate email ID, one that perhaps you don't use that frequently.

Be careful to whom you give your email ID

Whenever a website requests your email ID make sure that you know what they want it for. Read their privacy policy and then decide whether or not you want to be part of the activities of that particular website. Apart from this, do not give out your email ID in chat rooms.

Use a Spam filter

There is no such thing as a perfect filter, but you can get yourself anti-Spam software, which will help keep Spam at manageable level. Though some of it is cumbersome in that it might require for you to pass your email messages through some other system of storage and cleaning, right now it is the best solution. Load of other sundry trash make up the Spam booty.

Never buy anything advertised in Spam

As tempting as those smart buy offers in your junk folder might sound, remember the minute you fall for any of it you are making yourself a target for Spam.
