1) WHAT is SAMBA?
Samba is software running on the UNIX server that speaks "windows" and
allows users on a PC to "map a drive" to their home directory on the
UNIX server.
2) WHY do I want to use SAMBA?
By mapping your UNIX home directory to your PC, you are able to drag
and drop files in windows explorer or save them directly to that drive
from any application running on the PC.
In addition, any CAD or design files generated on your UNIX workstation
are immediately available on your PC, allowing you to attach them to
email to external vendors or design team members in other parts of the world.
By using SAMBA you do not have to have Reflections FTP or WS_FTP loaded
on your PC to move files back and forth from your engineering workstation.
Keeping PC generated critical engineering design files on your UNIX home
directory provides them with a regular backup and protection from power
loss or PC failures. They are also accessible to you from any company system
that logs you into your PC or UNIX account.
3) HOW do I get SAMBA?
"map a drive" on your PC to your engineering UNIX home directory.
SAMBA will not work on some PC's. Not sure what the problem
is, but if your PC won't work you'll have to use FTP or wait for an upgrade.
4) RECOMMENDATIONS for using SAMBA:
- limit storage of PC files to active and critical files
- avoid using filenames with spaces or special characters
- minimize PC application only files
- remember, Microsoft application files are not easily be viewed from UNIX
- remember, there is no UNDO for deleted files in your UNIX directory
- good security is recommended on your PC desktop - screen saver password
- monitor your disk usage from your UNIX account ( command: "bdf ." or "df -k ." )
Future enhancements planned in the UNIX engineering world include Star Office and
the GNOME desktop. Both provide a full suite of Microsoft compatible applications
that run from the UNIX side. The Sun and Linux users should already have Star Office.
The HP users will have to wait a while longer. In addition, both Sun and HP are working on
Gnome desktops, it may be available toward the end of this year. It will make the
engineering workstations more "user-friendly".
I have some basic UNIX training material on my website. I am working on
some new material that I hope to present soon.
