It has sat since March since it only gets used on bad weather days in the winter. We have owned it since new and never had a problem with it. Put in new battery, fluids, belt etc. Driving it the other day the engine light came on so I took it to a place and they said the evap system had a leak. He reset the code and it came on again the next day during cold engine use. I installed a new gas cap and unhooked the battery to reset the light. It was fine for a couple of days and about 100 miles but the light came on again this afternoon. NAPA does not have a listing for a Haynes manual amd I am loath to take it to a stealership. Is there a way to read the codes using the check engine light? Also, what comprises the evap system and where should I look for a likely sus[ect? Any ideas? I need that code to go away in order to pass NY inspection next month. It gets under the cap when you screw it on and shows on the computer as a 'leak'. This happened on my 99+00 XJ's. Doesn't happen anymore cuz the straps are in the dump!!! If this is the problem, yuo can have the codes reset or just wait a few days: The computer resets itself on a gas cap leak after (IIRC) 3 cold start/cool-down cycles. - -Don - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wayne E LaMothe" To: Sent: Sunday, September 03, 2006 8:39 PM Subject: xj: XJ trouble codes > Pulled my wife's 2001 XJ 4.0l out of summer storage the other day to get > it ready for winter.
